Founded in 1874, the company continues to thrive and is enjoying its third generation of ownership by a Dundee family. We are extremely proud of our origins – one only has to glance at the town centre today to notice the amount of retail operations that have been taken over, now belong to national chains, or indeed have ceased trading all together!
Quality, dependability and customer care have for over a century been hallmarks of our company, and are just a few of the values that I as the third generation of the family am fully committed to upholding.
Our rather unusual start may take folk by surprise. In 1874 Adams and Cushnie were potato merchants and did what was common in those days – the partners employed a working tailor to make clothes and Highlandwear for both themselves and their families.
For a decade the firm developed and continued the dual role of tailors and potato merchants, trading as J.D. Adams and Company. There must have been a particularly poor harvest one year however, because a decision was made that the future prosperity of the company was to lie in the tailoring side of the business!
Was this to prove a wise move? I am in absolutely no doubt that it was, and will happily let McDonalds expand the potato business within Reform Street these days!
